DownStage Center Audition Registration:
Madagascar JR. & Urinetown

Age Range

The age range for Madagascar JR. is 7-15, and 14-18 for Urinetown. Our age limits are guidelines. Sometimes 6 year olds audition, but remember, cast members MUST be able to read. Sometimes we accept older students for particularly challenging shows. If you are outside the age range and would like to audition, contact us for details.

Audition Requirements (Elementary/Middle School)

This is a workshop style audition that requires very little advance preparation. No poem or monologue is required for this audition. You will be asked to sing a simple song that you know well. Songs such as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star or Row, Row, Row Your Boat are perfectly acceptable for students of elementary school age. Older students should sing something more challenging, preferably from a Broadway Musical. Be sure to dress in clothes and shoes that you can move in and provide us with a current picture. A school picture or snapshot is fine. Make sure that it looks like you. Important Tip: The purpose of the photo is to help us remember you, so do not provide photos of you wearing a hat, holding a pet, or soaking wet on the beach. "Recognizable" is absolutely more important than "cute." A resume is optional, but recommended for candidates who have been in three or more productions.

Audition Requirements (High School/College)

Please prepare a 1 minute comic monologue and 16-32 bars of a song from a contemporary musical. Please bring your sheet music in a binder, for the accompanist. Please provide us with a photo. A school picture or snapshot is fine. Make sure that it looks like you. Important Tip: The purpose of the photo is to help us remember you, so do not provide photos of you wearing a hat, holding a pet, or soaking wet on the beach. Which play am I auditioning for?

The initial audition makes you a candidate for consideration in both plays, but please be aware that, in general, Madagascar JR. is intended for the younger actors and Urinetown is for the older actors, and specifically for high school/college students. There may be some exceptions to the age distribution, but that is the general intention.
