The Hi-Liners Musical Theatre in Burien, WA: Putting People Downstage Center Since 1966! Our productions, classes, workshops and camps are open to students ages 3 to 22. We are a non-profit youth theatre dedicated to providing professional direction to our young cast members to develop their talents with the backdrop of quality sets, costumes and a live orchestra, to give both the performers and the audience a genuine Broadway musical experience.

DSC Classes

In addition to developing theatre arts skills, DSC classes can help you develop your ability to speak up in school, increase the creativity going into your homework and improve your classroom presentations. It is documented that having the arts in our lives makes us better students in general!

Academy (Middle/High School)

Audition required. Yearlong commitment. (No class 12/25, 1/1, 2/12, 3/19, 4/9)

You have begun your exploration of singing, dancing and acting. Now you're ready for the next step. This class will dive deeply into a musical in a way that is impossible during a regular rehearsal process. Over a yearlong process, the students will take on production positions (i.e., directing, choreographing and design) as well as acting roles in a small cast musical. The production created by this class will be a part of the 2019 Season, culminating in a weekend of performances for the public.

Acting Fundamentals (Middle/High School*)

This class is designed for students who want to become more serious about the craft of acting. Push yourself and enhance your skills. Build confidence, work projection and diction, learn to commit to your acting choices, and increase your chances at your next audition.

Footlights (Ages 4-6*)

Children will practice active listening, following directions, and taking turns, BUT DON'T TELL THEM. They'll think we're just playing games, singing songs, and making up stories.

Imagination Station (Ages 6*-8)

*If your 6 year old is taking class with us for the first time, they should sign-up for Footlights before taking Imagination Station. (No class 12/25, 1/1)

Foundation skills of observation, mimicry, maintaining focus, and cueing are practiced in theatre games, stories and songs. Kids will begin to learn how to collaborate in small groups to create original short plays.

Musical Theatre Playhouse (Ages 9-11)

  • Wednesdays 4:30-5:30pm

The Playhouse is a place to learn to make the physical and vocal choices necessary to create a character. Students will work on the fundamental theatrical skills of vocal projection, making character choices, creating stage pictures, and collaborating with other actors.

Improv 1/Improv 2 (Ages 10-16)

Learn to think on your feet, be creative on demand and finally get the respect you deserve for being the class clown!

The age ranges below are guidelines. Students will be placed after the first session in their most appropriate dance level.

Ballet Warm-up (Ages 7 and Up)

Ballet is an essential investment for all of our dancers. It is a HIGH priority for The Hi-Liners to add proper alignment and strong technique to your growth as a musical theatre performer, so we are offering it at a dramatically reduced cost.

Dance for Musical Theatre 1/2 (Ages 7 and Up)

A Musical Theatre intensive focused on dance inspired by the choreography of Jerome Robbins, Bob Fosse, Michael Bennett and Agnes DeMille.

Musical Theatre tap class for beginners and those who want to enhance their skills.

June Recital

In the Spring, all DSC classes shift to a rehearsal focus to prepare for our June Recital. You can have a full production experience, complete with costumes, lighting, and a stage performance, but class is still only once a week!

DownStage Center reserves the right to cancel classes if enrollment does not meet minimum requirements. You will receive a confirmation notification via email one week before the scheduled class start date.
